Benjamin Mendy sues Man City

Benjamin Mendy joined Man City from Monaco in the summer of 2017 for around £52m. The French left-back signed a six-year contract with The Citizens, earning around £6m a year.

Mendy’s contract also guarantees him a £1m-a-season bonus if Man City qualify for the Champions League, a further £900,000 if he plays more than 60% of The Citizens’ matches in a season and £1.2m in image rights.

In August 2021, Benjamin Mendy was charged with four rapes and one sexual assault. The 2018 World Cup winner was immediately suspended by the English Football Association (FA). Meanwhile, Man City also announced that they would not pay Mendy’s salary until the 30-year-old defender returned to play. They also planned to “get rid” of Mendy when his contract expired in June 2023.

In July last year, Benjamin Mendy was found not guilty by the Court. After that, he officially left Man City to join Lorient (France) on a free transfer.

After leaving the Etihad, Mendy said he was still owed wages by Man City. And today, the star filed a lawsuit against Man City to demand £11 million in wages. Based on the terms of the contract, Benjamin Mendy asserted that The Citizens only have the right to stop paying him for a maximum of 6 weeks.

The outcome of the lawsuit is still unclear. For their part, Man City also gave their own arguments. The Premier League champions said that Mendy’s accusations had tarnished the team’s image. Previously, The Citizens continued to pay Benjamin Mendy’s salary after he was first arrested in November 2020.

Before being accused, Mendy had made 75 appearances in all competitions for Man City, winning three Premier League titles and one League Cup.
